Seattle Senior Living: Yesterday & Today

Presbyterian Retirement Communities Northwest (PRCN) has been a proud member of the Seattle, Washington, retirement community for over 5 decades. Incorporated in 1956 by the Presbyterian Church (USA), PRCN quickly became a place for seniors to live fully enriched lives. At the time PRCN was formed, there were not many retirement community options in Washington State, and the Church saw an opportunity to fill an important need to serve the community. The Presbyterian Church chose to extend its chartable, religious mission by providing housing and services for seniors through PRCN.

In November 1962, PRCN acquired the grand Exeter Hotel in downtown Seattle and converted it to the retirement community Exeter House. Today, Exeter House still maintains the charm and elegance of its original 1926 Tudor style architecture and fixtures.

Four months later, Park Shore opened in January 1963 in the Madison Park neighborhood. Perched on the shorelines of Lake Washington, Park Shore quickly became a destination for those who value remarkable views of Mount Rainier and lakeside living.

In 2002, PRCN entered into a Covenant Agreement with the Presbyterian Church. Under the agreement, the Church and PRCN severed all legal and financial ties. However, in honor of its heritage, PRCN has maintained the spiritual mission and Presbyterian element of its name. As a not-for-profit, faith-based organization, PRCN continues to serve seniors in a caring and dignified way. We also proudly and openly accept people of all faiths and backgrounds, promoting strong diversity among our residents and staff.

As people have started to live longer and the senior population has grown at a fast rate, PRCN recently saw a need to extend its services even farther. On April 4, 2007, PRCN began the groundbreaking to build a high-rise residential and health services community. Two years later on October 12, 2009, the doors were opened at Skyline at First Hill and The Terraces at Skyline to offer independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing, and memory support for the growing number of seniors in the Seattle area and Washington State.

With over 50 years of experience, PRCN continues to be the only multi-site, not-for-profit senior living organization in Seattle.
